The Romans, from Irchester, visited us on Thursday 4th December for another ‘home’ game at Saxon Hall. With the two Match mats laid in their “new” positions it was a slightly different set-up for the Saxon teams, who were keen to maintain their winning streak if they could.
Saxons ‘A’ won three of the first four ends to establish a small lead, and after sharing the next four ends with the visitors Saxons were still ahead by 8 shots to 5 at the half-way point in the game. A nice score of 4 shots in the twelfth end helped the Saxons to extend their lead in an otherwise quite even game. The Romans did their best to stage a fight back, but the early lead Saxons had established kept them out of trouble. Which was just as well, because in the final end a spirited 4 shots from the Romans brought them up to only four behind, but Saxons held on the win at 16 shots to 12.
Saxons ‘B’ started steadily on the other mat, winning six of the first eight ends, and holding Romans to scoring only 1 in the two ends they managed to take, so that half way through Saxons were in the lead by 9 shots to 2. The Romans then came back strongly in the second half of the game, winning five of the next seven ends, including making a 3 and a 4 on their way to drawing level with Saxons at 12 all after the penultimate end. A determined Saxon team kept their heads and worked together to get a win by 2 shots in the final end, coming out the winners by 14 shots 12.
Saxons ‘A’ won by 16 – 12
Saxons ‘B’ won by 14 – 12
Saxons won overall, 30 to 24
Team A : Tony Sellick, John Riddell, Kathy Marshall, Chris Selling
