In a reversal of what happened in the previous match, this week it was Saxons ‘A’ team that came to the rescue, helping a losing ‘B’ team over the line for a Saxons win overall at the Romans in Irchester on Thursday 5th February. Yet again we were asked to play a game of 18 ends by our hosts, not 16 as we usually do ‘at home’.
The first ten ends on the Saxons ‘A’ mat were shared fairly evenly with the home team, with just a score of 4 in the sixth end for Irchester making a difference and giving them the advantage at that point to lead by 9 shots to 8. However a massive score of 7 by Saxons in the next end then took them ahead, and winning the next two ends also put Saxons well in front of Romans by 20 shots to 9. Despite managing to win three of the last five ends the Romans team were unable to make much of a dent in such a lead, so that Saxons won convincingly by 23 shots to 14.
Saxons ‘B’ made a decent but low scoring start, on a tricky mat, to be just ahead at 3 shots to 2 after four ends. Unfortunately we then went down by 6 shots in the fifth end, making the score 3 -8, and for the rest of the match we had to play catch-up, and worked hard to stay in touch with our opposition. Ends six to eighteen were, amazingly, evenly shared, with each team winning six of them and one end being tied. Both Saxons and Romans increased their scores by 8 shots, but that still meant Saxons were the losers after all was finished by 11 shots to 16.
Saxons ‘A’ won by 23 – 14
Saxons ‘B’ lost by 11 – 16
Saxons won overall, 34 to 30
Team A : Tony Sellick, Jeanette Statham, Roger Bond, Chris Selling
Team B : Anna Davies, Les James, Kathy Marshall, Roger Gill
