A better afternoon for us on Thursday 29th January 2026 when we faced teams from Redwell Bowls Club, at Redwell in Wellingborough. In a close fought match of eighteen ends one Saxon team lost, and one Saxon team won, fortunately with enough of a margin to carry the win to Saxons overall.
In a match that went back and fore between the teams, Saxons ‘A’ took four of the first nine ends, and were just 1 shot ahead of Redwell at that point with Saxons 7, Redwell 6. But a score of 4 shots in the tenth end then took Redwell into the lead, and despite the two teams sharing the last six ends with three each, Saxons never quite closed the gap, although they were close at 12 shots to 13 after seventeen ends. Redwell’s final score of 3 in the last end took the game away from us, and Saxons lost, 12 shots to 16.
Saxons ‘B’ made a worrying start to their game, only winning one of the first five ends, and trailing by just 1 shot to 8. But an encouraging score of 4 shots in the sixth end marked the start of a steady comeback with a real team effort by all four players, so that after eleven ends the scores were tied at 11 each.
After that, Redwell didn’t win another end, and although Saxons didn’t make any more high scores they kept pulling away by 1 or 2 shots at a time over the remaining seven ends, finishing with a good win at 20 shots to 11.
Saxons ‘A’ lost by 12 – 16
Saxons ‘B’ won by 20 – 11
Saxons won overall, 32 to 27
Team A : Tony Sellick, Ann Cook, Roger Bond, Chris Selling
Team B : Anna Davies, Carole Bourne, Kathy Marshall, Roger Gill
